I agree with this reasoning, Dave. From a geometrical point of view, this effect is indeed obvious. I guess, what you call "fuss" is a manifestation of a degree of surprise of people - people not necessarily working in quantum information - about the fact that such a natural property as a degree of entanglement would not be a smooth function (although this just being a consequence of its definition). I am sure that there will be many papers on "sudden death" effects related to convex subset of state space that have an interior, as Matt has already anticipated. To end on a positive note, there is a value in looking at specific dynamics of open quantum systems, so just discussing that and leaving out the "surprise value" of a sudden death effect could and should be meaningful.
